What is this Consultation Support Desk?
The Consultation Support Desk is a consultation service providing support for recruiting Specified Skilled Workers in the food industry. It was set up by the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry.

Examination questions

I want to study for the examination. Are there any study materials I can use?

What language is used in the examination in Japan?
Examination questions are given in Japanese.
Can I get hold of past papers?

You cannot get hold of past papers, but some sample questions are provided on the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries website.

Eligibility for the examination

I do not live in Japan. Can I still take the examination in Japan?

You can, if you meet the criteria for eligibility. Guidelines for examinations are provided on the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry website. Please read the section on qualifications for sitting the examination carefully before applying.

Can technical interns take the examination?
Those who are still under training as technical interns on the day of the examination are not eligible to take the examination.
Can international students take the examination?
Yes, international students can take the examination. But those who have dropped out of university and lost their qualifications cannot take the examination.
Is there an upper age limit for sitting the examination?
While candidates need to be at least 17 years of age on the day of the examination, there is no upper age limit.

Can organizations apply for the examination?
No, organizations cannot apply for the examination.
Can a proxy apply on my behalf?
Yes, a proxy can apply on your behalf. If the person acting as a proxy is registering multiple candidates, then this person needs to register a different email address for each individual candidate. In addition, the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry will end out important emails to these addresses containing information on such things as the confirmation of payment of the examination fee and whether or not the individual’s application has been accepted. Therefore, please ensure that this information is passed on to those seeking to take the examination.
Can the examination venue be changed?
You cannot change the examination venue once you have applied and paid the examination fee. In addition, the examination fee is non-refundable. Please double check the content of your application carefully when applying.
Can I take the examination as many times as I want?
Yes, you can take the examination as many times as you want until you pass.
Can I take more than one examination at the same time? (Examinations for the Food Industry and Manufacture of Food and Beverages)

Yes, you can. If you login in to My Page on the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry website, you can select which examinations you wish to take.

What is the ABC type?

The allotment of marks differs by type. For more details, please see, “3. Examination subjects and methods of administration, etc.” in the examination guidelines provided on the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry website.

Examination results/pass certificates

I lost my pass certificate. What should I do?

You can have your pass certificate reissued, but only once. Please have a good search for your certificate, and if you still cannot find it, call the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry.

I passed the test, but have yet to receive a pass certificate. What should I do?

You may not receive your pass certificate if you failed to complete your address properly or you do not have a name card. Please call the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry.

What is the validity period for pass certificates?
The validity period for pass certificates is 10 years from the date of issue.

Examinations outside Japan

I do not live in a country in which examinations outside Japan are administered. Can I still take the test?
Yes, you can. Please read the section on qualifications for sitting the examination carefully before applying.
Are the questions that appear in examinations outside Japan in my own language?

During fiscal year 2019, the questions will be in both local languages and Japanese. Please visit the Examinations outside Japan page on the Organization for Technical Skill Assessment of Foreign Workers in Food Industry website for detailed examination guidelines.
